Not so Keen with 2013

Pesky Mayans. Why couldn’t have they been right? Why couldn’t it all end in 2012? It was such a great year that the following had so much to live up to. It didn’t. 2013 was the worst year I had ever lived through. No contest. Usually, I give out 10 best moments that I experienced throughout the year. Last year, I doubt I could even think of five.

Let’s see. You think you’d get a slow start since nothing really happens on January. But no. See, after my birthday, it was decided that I’m destined for greater things. Say, lead my team to glory. Or more realistically, my superior felt the need to take her talents to Miami, er, Ortigas. And being the heir apparent and all, I rose to the ranks and become the Nth Earl of Grantham, I mean, OIC. Great way to start the year, right? Wrong. With great power comes additional night differential. How I hated night shifts. Nothing good ever comes out of working nights. But in order to lead, one must embrace the darkness. And so I have been a creature of the night for almost a year now. I believe this is where it started to go downhill for me.

The succeeding months were a blur of misery. You’d think I’d be thankful for the opportunity, but I never make things easy. Somewhere in March, there was another change of leadership. But this time, it involved royalty. Our long-time manager, my then superior, did a Dwight Howard and transferred to another team for a chance of another ring. Or simply because we can’t afford him anymore. Either way, a new player was activated, a lady boss. Lady boss is cool. If she had come to us earlier, during our glory (bad pun) years, we could have made wonderful things happen. Alas, her arrival meant some changes, and those changes weren’t just simple tweaks.

By middle of the year, we bid farewell to that other team in our account. The Red Coats just suddenly surrendered as they weren’t making enough profits. Naturally, being the stable of the two, we can just absorb these people and carry on with our lives as if nothing happened. Yeah, we were all sipping tea and exchanging tales for at least a month before the powers that be decided to cut more losses. Good bye, mates. It was, well, interesting. Good thing these kinds of things will never ever happen to a sturdy and strong team like mine.

I’ve always loved September. September is where the magic always happen. Guess, last year’s wasn’t all that different. Except it wasn’t white magic, but horrible bad juju. Execute Order 66. Or in the words of the Great Emperor Palpatine, “Wipe them out. All of them.” Finally. We’re getting the boot. Well, some of us are. I just lost people that I’ve known for more than half a decade. Some I consider friends, some acquaintances, but both very heartbreaking. So out of that almost 300 people we started with, after the Battle of Thermopylae, only seven of us are left. And that’s how it had been since then. The icing on the cake is that this all happened under my watch. So much for a brave and fearless leader. Wait. I’m not actually The leader. Not officially anyway. But as Chandler Bing’s principle, if one accepts promotion, one is finally accepting that it is his/her official job. This is all temporary to me, all seven years of it.

So 2013, such a magical month. But I suppose I couldn’t say nothing good came out of the year. By June, my Western family came home yet again to celebrate Iya’s 80th. Such a huge event. The family also had the Anvaya Cove Experience. Beach and buffets, I think that qualifies as a win. September had its share of magic as my high school buddy Adrian tied the knot with his long-time beau, Franchelle. It was part surreal, part expected. I always knew the bastard’s going to be the first one to settle. Suffice to say, it was great seeing those guys again. Something I’m pretty sure won’t happen in the near future. What else? We celebrated Mom’s birthday at Tagaytay with a pretty awesome lunch. And October brought about the annual Bernabe Halloween Bash. Much better turn out this year, which raised the bar for next year’s. Lastly, my San Beda Red Lions got its fourth straight championship crown by November. They say it’s the sweetest, what with all the hardships the team had to endure throughout the season. I’m inclined to believe it is.

(Clockwise) Col. Sanders, Anvaya, 4-peat, IanCelle, Mom

What do you know? There are five memories that are to be cherished after all. Few more things, 2013 saw the emergence of my love for anything Oriental. Chinese, really. I don’t care much for Koreans. Anyway, anything oriental. Like while I’m writing this, there is erhu music playing in the background. And don’t get me started on Hong Kong Cinema. Look, I know I’ve been dragging this whole Hong Kong is the best place in the world for quite some time now, but it is. Deal with it. I started with a couple of martial arts films, Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan flicks mostly, and now I can probably name a good number of Hong Kong celebrities and their movies. Probably better than my knowledge of local entertainment. Some say it gives one culture when one is diverse with his world cinema. I say, they’re right. It’s an addiction, as much as I love a plate of dim sum and chopsticks.

I’ve been reading again. Surprising as it may sound, I am. Though let’s not get carried away. It’s mostly Kafka’s works, that I stay away from. Seriously, anything beyond 300 pages -- not cool. But it’s a vast improvement from just bothering with books that have pictures on them. Hey, even if I’m reading fantasy literature, the point is I’m reading. And it made me remember how much I love mythology and, more importantly, history. Now there’s a career I want to get myself into.

But the real reason why I don’t have love for 2013? It changed me. For the worse. And that is another story for another time. Just know that that change took over me, the whole of me.

Here’s your 10 words of 2013: CHANGE, DEFEAT, ISOLATION, FAMILY, FOOD, MYTHOLOGY, MISERY, ORIENTAL, TELEVISION, SURVIVAL

(--,) is currently obsessed on anything Cantonese, has been reading Riordan’s works and is very much addicted to Downton Abbey. You may notice tones in his writing concerning those three.

ReAPEr

Do not mistake my confidence with courage. I’m not some little sissy girl but if I can avoid physical conflicts or any conflict for that matter, I shall! I can probably talk my way out of most things, again, not involving courage; definitely attributed to confidence. So, it’s just normal that I have phobias. Never really gave it much thought and just try to get by it if need be. But for the past 50 days or so, this being terrified of sharp objects reached gigantic scales.

A visit from GREAPER2

Annual Physical Exam, what else? Some things I dread annually: that random two weeks I will be seriously sick, my birthday (reason being I age but I love the festivities), and the worst: company physical exam. I hate sharp objects, okay. It’s not the pain nor the blood; it’s the whole thought of being poked by a needle and your precious blood extracted. Gory and uncomfortable, I tell you. But, as the law applies to all or none at all, I have to comply. Every year, I get by fine. Good, right? You’d think I’d be jaded by it after all these years. Well, I thought so too. It’s different as the deadline approaches.

It was announced early last month, June, that we have to undergo the damn thing. What can I do? Simple: prolong my agony by procrastination, which is actually stupid because it prolongs my agony. So, for almost or beyond 50 days, I was terrified mentally, exhausted physically, and seriously ill-tempered. I would say that it was worse this year than the last two as I felt like it really affected me personally. It’s over though. I had accomplished it this morning. Like last year, a few seconds and my dilemma is effing over.

What do you know, two of my most dreaded annual moments happened within the month as I also had that “very sick state.” Wow. I must have really pissed off those people in-charge or someone who dictates my fate. I may be skeptic about you, destiny, but nevertheless, I’m sorry. Please do not stick sharp metal objects into me again.

P.S.: and someone important got hitched this afternoon.
Well, that’s that. Congratulations!

Sickening

Second blog in less than a week, something must be really wrong with me. Oh, yes. I am stuck home yet again. This time around, I am sick. Gots to give meself credit. I have dodged viruses and disease-stricken teammates for a month or so. Thing is, once I come down something, I’m useless, well, more than usual.

Sore effing throat matched with dry cough is never fun. I usually dismiss these petty ill feelings by thinking that it’s nothing and I’d be well in no time. It will need much more than some minor sickness to make me miss work day. (No, not loyalty. Please! More concerned with the repercussions I will suffer after as companies such as ours does not really care that much about the health and welfare of their employees, well, at least if they don’t follow SOP). Not today.

I followed SOP. It’s just that I missed the “call-two-hours-before-shift” rule by nine measly minutes. And with that, it’s my second insubordination in less than a week. I feel honored. But what can I do? Our work force people were born to annoy and make matters worse for us. So do not give me that “just-doing-their-job” thing. In Jamie’s words, “I do not give a flying fuck.”

I miss my past superiors. I feel they care more and handle the team properly. One of us gets sick and you actually believe they genuinely care and will do everything in their power to make sure this sickness of yours is not used against you. That’s a leader right there. Nowadays you get sick and it’s your fault that you did not anticipate you being not well and you should’ve followed SOP and you should do this and you should do that and you should follow this…again, not giving a flying fuck!!! Hate being sick so much, it sickens me!

Stranded in Merville

Wow. Actual free time write to something. And wouldn’t you know it, I have nothing interesting to share. So I’m stuck home, on a work day. Here’s why. All ParaƱaque service road exit points: Nichols, Bicutan, Moonwalk…flooded! And I mean ridiculously flooded. I was already in the comfort of a Besta van shuttle along West Service Road, for an hour and a half, to no avail. Even trucks are not risking it. Chickens! So I just went home. Why is it that every time I wear my light brown socks, they always get wet from water pools and flood?

I think I saw a bald monk running towards the bell tower...

Lots of people are envious of my situation as I get to rest or watch DVD the whole day. Damn straight I can. But then again, I can already feel the memo and reprimanding of the T&C council members tomorrow. We all know how sucky BPO policies on emergency leaves are. You’re already bleeding to death or your legs decapitated and you still ain’t excused, unless you call! “It is not our fault that you did not anticipate what you experienced!” I wonder. Let’s say you work in the outsourcing business, same rules and policies apply. For some reason you’re a suspect and is detained. You only get one phone call. Do you call your attorney or your company’s workforce? Obviously, your lawyer. But admit it, for a split second you were considering calling your office, right? Bah!

So I just wasted a perfectly normal working day doing nothing. Ah, yes. Exactly how absentness should be spent.

I just realized. Heaven forbid, there is a zombie attack on where I live, and there’s a massive storm like now, I’d die! We’re trapped. Like I said, all points! I’d be eaten. Tsk!

EDIT: It’s already 5:00 pm and only an hour left before my supposed shift ends and our work force is still busy! Impressive, most impressive!

May

Action-packed is the adjective I will use to describe May. I honestly believed that it would take a couple more months before April gets unseated as “the” month of 2009. Family-wise, April still holds that honor but on a personal level, May deserves the recognition. And...so much happened in May. That I never expected in a month that is of no importance to me that much.

May’s highlight would be this life-changing opportunity and some unforgettable events were held within the span of 31 days. The month also marked finales of my favorite TV shows, which I shall include in this list just because I consider them huge deals and also, they provided momentarily excitement. Of course, I probably forgot some minor noteworthy days but the special ones will surely be written. Here you go...

May 1, 2009 | “ME” Day
I remember Kristine telling me that for me, everyday is “ME” Day! And I of course I agree because it’s true. But there are certain days that are better than most...like this day. It was Labor Day and I decided to go ahead and avail the holiday option. Had my haircut and treated myself to Mexican lunch (amidst the swine flu scare).

May 3, 2009 | Sleeping Hitman
This day marks the first time I’ve ever watched a boxing bout. I never really appreciated boxing because I feel they’re too violent. Wrestling is different since they’re fake and scripted. Oh yeah, the fight was between Manny Pacquiao against Ricky Hatton, with Pac-Man knocking out Hitman in two rounds. Waste of time, really.

May 4, 2009 | Sbarro
Just one of them dinners after shift with Mamee and Diana. We were really hungry but we still did not finish what Sbarro had to offer. Tsk! Z’s already in the morning shift but she’s “busy” so she’s not in this one.

[Picture to follow]

May 10, 2009 | Mother’s Day
Initially, my plan was to take Mum and Iya out to lunch on some Italian restaurant. Was worried though that lots of restaurants will be full of celebrations. Good thing Mum thought that inviting my Ninong and Ninangs over for lunch is a better idea. It is. It saved me from an expensive bill and it’s always fun to have my cousins over. Happy Mother’s Day!

May 12, 2009 | Star Trek
It’s official. This day made me a Trekkie. Never really much cared for Star Trek because I felt it was too complicated as it had too many series and characters. But the latest movie, oh wow! One just has to watch it to understand. I can honestly say that Star Trek will be “the” movie of 2009. Only Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen stands a chance against the awesome Spock!

May 13, 2009 | Mangan
Yet another after shift dinner, this time though, Z is present. Starbucks Coffee after because we had coupons. Hooray for coupons.

May 13, 2009 | Kodak Easy Share C913
Okay. This is totally unexpected. Sure I wanted a new camera but I never thought of getting one. I’ve never hidden my trait of being a caveman when it comes to technology, and if my current gadget is working, why replace it? But I will never refuse a free treat! I may not know the special features or how awesome my new toy is but it takes pretty shots. Thank you to my Ninang for this magnificent gift! Woohoo!

May 15, 2009 | Special-ish
A general meeting was called by the boss to announce the latest happenings in our team. We welcomed two new additions, top performers were honored (ehem, ehem) and they announced newly promoted “Specialists” (just a fancier word for Editors). Two years and eight months and four IJAFs later, finally, overlooked no more! It would have been better though if I get to share this honor with two special individuals.

May 15, 2009 | Angels & Demons
Friday Night is Movie Night. The movie gave me a new dream job. Symbologist or physicist, you might say. I was thinking, more on the lines of being the Holy See or at least, the Camerlengo. LOL! Very cool movie. Not much historical references and some major points from the novel were left out but no one could have done it better. Action-packed and fast-paced for a controversial flick is nothing short of a miracle.

May 17, 2009 | Lola Internment and Visiting Tits’ Resting Place
Caloocan...is far but we have relatives living there and so we have obligation to visit them once in a while, especially, when one of them dies. Lola is with the Lord now and is guaranteed everlasting happiness, I’m sure. We also had the chance to visit Tits’ ashes in Our Lady of Grace Columbarium.

May 21, 2009 | New American Idol
I would not have requested for my schedule to be changed on this day had I known the conclusion of American Idol’s eighth season would be the most disappointing and shocking moment of Idol history...ever! Kris Allen pulled a major upset against the hyped and sure bet Adam Lambert. How he did that, people will never really understand. Not to take anything away from Kris, but even he was expecting and hoping for Adam to take home top honors. Do not crucify the guy. It was the voters who are to blame! Oh, well...

May 21, 2009 | RoNyce
An after shift session with my new favorite couple: Ronn and Nyce. Yes, you heard it right. After almost three years, our favorite supposedly platonic couple suddenly became not-so-platonic anymore. This may come as a shock to most people, even I had an OMFG moment when it was confirmed, but we were kinda expecting this will happen...just not this soon, right? Nevertheless, we’re all rooting for you two! Hihihi!

May 22, 2009 | Renee’s Lola’s Internment and Mendiola Tour
Most of the time, Renee’s the most annoying friend we have. But I also have the utmost respect for this bozo! Amidst all the trials he is going through, he still manages to have that sunny disposition and continuously entertain/annoy everyone with his antics. That’s why it is just proper that we pay our respects to his Lola Maria. Without her, we wouldn’t have met this idiot! Hehehe. And it just so happens that the wake took place near Mendiola, one of my favorite places ever. Together with Diana, we toured Rai around the consortium and even ate at one of our hangouts during our college days. Missed my beloved school!

May 24, 2009 | Night at the Museum II: Battle of the Smithsonian
The first movie was a success, and it will stay that way. Don’t get me wrong, the sequel is still worth the ticket price and I still say you should watch it. It introduced new characters and had much more historical reference than the former. Still, I very much enjoyed my movie experience with the first one that I probably expected too much for its sequel. One good thing I got from this: I now appreciate Amy Adams. Such an awesome red-haired woman!

May 29, 2009 | Binsent’s Homecoming at Jay-J’s, Ortigas
What’s not to love about this night? I can think of one thing but I’m not letting that spoil this wonderful session with the Mean Boys. Vinchy’s officially stationed in the metro again, so he decided to round us up to celebrate. Turn out was unexpected as lots of my college friends made it on such short notice. Felt like we are really getting old as Teri’s already in the second trimester of her pregnancy. But what really surprised us that Boyds’ new girlfriend (whose name still eludes me) is also in her second trimester and a month ahead of Teri. Okay! Shocking news it was. Long story, but it still is actually. Again, what’s not to love? There were seven of us, Mean Boys, but all-in-all we were 13. Gets?

May 30, 2009 | Bowling and T.G.I.Fridays’
A month would not be a success without an event with my beloved teammates. It’s been a while since the last time we participated in any sporting event as a team and we felt that we needed to go bowling immediately, so we did, with Diana taking Kads’ spot. Had a lousy game perhaps due to my gimik the night before, thus, giving Anthony top honors. Boo! As promised, I would bring the team to T.G.I.Fridays’ to celebrate my being special, but not to pay the whole thing. We all know the similarities of pickpockets and Fridays’: they leave your wallets empty. But we did have fun and I could not think of a better way to end May.

Wow. It’s still about May, right? I feel like I’m writing about December, being lengthy and all. But I am not complaining and I am definitely thankful for it.

Shoutout of Happy Birthdays to: Johann, T.Joey, Camille G., L.Diegs, U.Mon, Nathan, T.Josette, Butch, Karen M., N.Rey, Shaila, and Lolo Angel +

Season finales were one of the main themes of this month. My favorite shows ended and people are to wait for months to know what happens for those who chose to end their seasons with cliffhangers. Supernatural, Lost, Heroes, Chuck and Gossip Girl. Prison Break had the best ending from all of them, probably the best finale since F.R.I.E.N.D.S ended five years ago. I would have included it in the list but I have already shared my two-cents worth and because it deserves a separate entry.

Okay. I just have to mention this. This was taken from the Mean Boys’ session. Like I said, there were seven of us but our total headcount were 13. Still don’t see my point? It means everyone had plus ones and I was the only single bastard in that group! A head’s up would be nice, Vince! Big deal! Yeah, I know. I should not be bitchin about it, but one can’t help but feel something when placed into those kinds of situations. Solution: might not go out with kada anytime soon! LOL! What? You think be with someone? Please!

To conclude my April entry, I was thinking twice about May. I honestly thought it wouldn’t deliver. Hell, it more than delivered! Maybe I should be discourage myself with June too. But, June holds the annual and most social party event that I am invited to. The kind of event that one needs new threads and probably another haircut: Paulooza 2009! Can’t freaking wait! Thank you, May! (--,)

Michelangelo (not the turtle)

It took Michelangelo four years to finish the magnificent ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. It took me nine hours less lunch and coffee breaks to finish typing this documentary about him. It would be appropriate if I would write a little something about the world’s greatest artist in history…but I’m pretty sure that I had a little too much Michelangelo information to last me until I’m 30. Put me on a gameshow with trivia about him and I’d win the grand prize. But, in the spirit of art and history, this guy deserves his title of being the greatest. According to the documentary, he is the first superstar figure in history, at least, with regards to the art world, and if you spent hours and hours researching about him, I guarantee you’ll agree with that statement. Coolest part would be him pitted against his greatest rival at their time: the famed Leonardo da Vinci, then, without his movie deals and controversial works of literature. They were in this battle that would’ve decided who is better, but, as fate would have it, the epic clash did not finish. Leo screwed up his paints and Mikey was called by the Upper East Siders, I mean, by the Pope to do this little project he’s been planning, you know, paint the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. No big deal, right? Yeah, upon completion, Mikey was immortalized in movies and mutant turtles were named after him.

Cellphone receptions in the old days are bad.

Right. This guy is the man. Regardless of his “preferences” hell, his works were masterpieces and timeless. Now I know why the best artists in the world belong to the softer classification. One of the things that I want to do before I meet my maker is to travel. Rome is definitely on my itinerary. I would so want to see the Sistine Chapel and marvel at its ceiling. Yeah, I’m definitely doing that. I think it’s safe to say that I am a self-proclaimed renowned Michelangelo scholar. Hahaha! Michelangelo Buonarroti, you’re now my favorite dead artist. Gratzi for everything.

PS: During those days, why were people who say the world is round burned at stakes? LOL. Sorry, but I really find that funny! Wouldn’t it be so ever amazing if that were implemented nowadays? Heeheehee.

Tired + Exhausted + Weary = Fun

Tired! I’m probably using my reserves already just to keep myself going. I haven’t really been getting appropriate rest in the past few days. It’s not like something that is time-consuming happened. I don’t know. Last weekend, I only got 7 to 8 hours of sleep tops. Nonstop partying and after-effects of it kept me awake all throughout my rest days. Not that I’m complaining, I did had lots of fun. But I am feeling the consequences of going all Energizer Bunny.

T&C Survivors showcasing their not-fake-at-all smiles

Yesterday, our team had its general assembly. Many of us thought it would be that big of a deal because the team’s not really used to meetings and assembly, unless terrible news is to be relayed. But no, the meeting was actually light, kinda fun even. Sure, the hint of fake smiles and nonchalant emotions are somewhat apparent, but hey, I won two awards so I totally enjoyed it. Especially when we got to this IceBreaker challenge prepared by the bosses and when our new boss brought out his camera--photo-ops! Best part...the “acceptance” and picture taking with the presenter. *Heehee* Meeting was held 8:00 am so it’s one of the reasons why my insides feel like jello as of the moment.

And to keep the good times rolling, since it’s very rare that our schedules meet, what better way to make it all memorable than to go all sporty by bowling. Yes, I’m literally dragging myself to Mall of Asia but I know it’s going to be worth it. It’s dinner first at Pupung’s resto (how I miss thee) and then let the games begin. My team lost, and the shot that could’ve made the difference, I took it. Nevertheless, I was right. All of us enjoyed ourselves. And here’s your proof: 17. The Game.

How I wish for the weekend to arrive early. I feel like I’m coming down with something. I know I probably won’t get enough and suggested sleep hours but I will at least try. Oh, the pain and weakness of exhaustion. And I don’t even know why and how. What the hell’s causing this weariness? Good thing there’s always something/someone to look forward to every single day. Zzzzzz (--.)

Edge of Seventeen

Today marks my sophomore year in this crazyness that is my job. Batch 17 celebrates its second year anniversary in the transcription business. Funny that I still call it Batch 17 as there are only two remaining individuals from that group of promising people: me and Uncle Roi. And the fact of the matter is, with Roi shipped to another vertical, I am the only remaining “Disi-Siete” in our account.

Disi-Siete’s Final Two

Like those before me who celebrated their two-year annivs from the past months, I get the same reactions and statements from people: “Andyan ka pa din?” And with head up high, my normal reply would be, “Yep, why?” Loyalty, one might say. Please! Truth is, I’m just waiting for our account’s dissolution so that I can get my well-deserved separation pay. Happy? Sure, why not? Contented? Of course not. Today also marks the last “batch” who will celebrate their anniversary as members of those two batches after ours are already living the good life in other companies or already happy taking calls in other accounts.

Am I destined to grow old in this god-forsaken account? No, I know won’t be. Just today I received a lengthy phone call from an old friend offering me to transfer to their company with some ridiculously (in a good way) compensation and benefits package. I’m considering it, but then again with it comes adjustments and some definite changes. It’s really hard to turn your back on your comfort zone.

Enough negativity. Even if we’re working in a make-shift hell that is our account, you cannot take away the fact that I met some lifelong friends here: my batchmates. From the last updates I had gotten, here’s what these Disi-Siete people are up to:

Talla – is doing some admin work in a reputable office in Pioneer.
Arnee – email/chat support in Sutherland.
Elgin – photo editor for UNO Magazine.
Rosie – Senior Associate for Headstrong Philippines Inc.
Mau – according to her Friendster, racket-racket…hehe
Arlene – migrated with her husband in Australia.
Mira – I’m sure is happily married and a new mom.
Genn – I think is working in a law firm in Global City.
Shei - I ain’t sure if she’s still in Dubai.
Ria Fe – is still a mom but haven’t heard from her since she resigned.
Ginno and Denise – I don’t know what the hell these two are up to.
And of course, to our beloved Lia who passed away last month, this one’s for you. We miss you most of all.

With Talla and Arnee

Given the fact that our batch weren’t that close with each other, we’re definitely friends, and of course, family. We were filled with hope and excitement that 7th of August of 2006, little did we know…LOL! Seriously though, I know a get-together is a long shot, but I’m hopeful.

For what it’s worth, Happy Anniversary Batch 17.

Na Na Hey Hey Kiss It Goodbye

Exactly what I feel like chanting since last week…“Na Na Hey Hey Kiss It Goodbye”…to VTxt. I’ve had my share of resentments in the office but nothing compares to these evil three-minute messages. Yesterday, the first day of July, marks the end of all our suffering from VTxt as their contract expired and weren’t renewed, or something like that. Wahoo! I am freaking free.

You see, sure it’s good that VTxt means job security for our vertical, but the reason why we do what we do is because we don’t wanna take calls. VTxt is like taking calls only you the calls are recorded and generated into this whole voice capturing text yadda yadda yadda. Too complicated. We get the recorded message in text format and we edit that for whoever came up with the idea. No big deal right? Sure, but try doing that while accomplishing other tasks and these pesky messages just pop out in our monitors without any warning. Like I said, it’s like taking calls, queuing and all. And since the messages are inevitable, coverage must be 24/7. I became the Saturday afternoon guy for VTxt way back in March of this year. Even wrote about it: here. Basically, it means I cannot apply leaves during Saturdays as I am the only one who looks after the whole damn thing. But not anymore! Yay!

No more short breaks, constant checks on the monitor, early lunches, and so on. Best of all, no more pointless multi-tasking. Indeed, life is kinda good.

A Reason to Stay

Sound the alarm, ring the bells, bring out our finest Chinaware…I just won something! Hah! And they said I wasn’t lucky. Now, I have an answer when someone asks me why I’m still putting up with my job…that, my dears, is because I won my dream parking slot. Yeah!

Not bad after two tries. Actually, the results went out last week and I wasn’t included in the roster, so surprise surprise this morning when I opened my mailbox and found this email from admin asking me to claim my parking badge. Err…right! Well, I got excited. I mean, I have been wanting this privilege ever since I started working in our company, and now I finally got it. That’s three months of free parking--very, very grateful.

The ironic thing is there are two loopholes on this happiness that I’m feeling. First, gasoline prices are killing everyone literally--be it vehicle owners or commuters, no one’s really exempted. The other, is because of my so-called “lifestyle.” Like I said, the family is out to get me and their leader, Mum, being the shifty parent that she is, decided to impound my car and prohibited me from using it until all repairs and fixtures are done. (Hence, the creepy note on the mirror thing) Right! Like that will stop me. Oh, anyway, I’m just really glad with this blessing. Tomorrow’s Friday the 13th, and let me just say, my luck’s extra good-y when it’s Friday the 13th. Oh yeah, I don’t believe in luck, but that’s another story. (--,)

Chinese Catastrophe

Over 12,000 people have died in the recent earthquake scare in the province of Sichuan in China, and almost 18,000 are feared buried from the rubbles and ruins in Mianyang city, which is near the epicenter of the said disaster. A cyclone named Nargis struck Myanmar last week which took over 100,000 lives and destroyed living conditions of Burmese people. Twenty-three were reported dead after a series of tornadoes decided to visit Arkansas and Oklahoma, which is still ongoing as of this moment. Hell literally peeks at South Florida as several of its counties and areas are burning from wildfires. And Boston succumbed to Cleveland from the NBA second round Playoffs last night which makes it 2-2 in the stands. (Hey, that’s devastating news for me).

The news is reporting so much disasters and catastrophe that one can’t help but fear for the human race. Well, not really to the point of the apocalypse but you never know. As I was watching the news, I saw these Chinese volunteers pulling this kid from the ruins of a school and what a sight it was. The kid was alive by the way, but his classmates were not so lucky. Lifeless body parts are hanging from rubbles and signs of life are slowly fading. Even this rare specie of pandas were affected but not to worry, as they’re safe. It’s like a scene taken from one of those big-budgeted Hollywood disaster movies. Tsk tsk tsk…

And here I was thinking I had a bad day. Correction: I had a lethargic day. It’s like 2006 all over again. Don’t care about schedules, don’t care if I’m late, hell, I don’t even care if they sanction me or what; I ain’t doing reports because it was never my responsibility in the first place. Sorry! I know there are people who have bigger problems, massive even, than me. Just needed to get that out of my system.

Let’s all pray for the lives lost and for those who are yet to be saved from these catastrophes. May their families and loved ones find comfort in knowing that they’re okay. And may the Chinese community recover from all of these.

A Quite Perfect Sunday

I just had one of the bestest Sundays ever, and I was at the office. Now, that’s a feat. Yes, it’s a Sunday and I had to report to office today. A colleague requested to swap schedules with me so she could have her vacation, which is fine by me because it’s my turn to have a long weekend next week. Anyway, nothing really jump-0ut-of-your-seat moments, it’s just that I enjoyed the day.

Well, I woke up very early to hear mass and it’s been a while since I went to mass on a Sunday morning. We usually hear mass after lunch or night time because I don’t like waking early on first day of the week. Sundays are supposed to be a day of rest. Even God decided to take a breather on this glorious day. So usually I gain consciousness when its time for our weekly brunch, but I wasn’t able to join the family today (sigh). The mass ended at 11:30, which means I only had 30 minutes to make it to office as my shift starts at 12 noon.

For some reason, I made it on time. I love Sundays. No traffic and stupid pedestrians. Yay! I parked at the side of our building, which is usually pointless as they will tow it at the stroke of 5:00 pm on weekdays, but since it’s a Sunday, it’s all good. I even had a small talk with the MAPSA guy. He’s inquiring about BPOs. Told him that if ever he’s interested to tell me so that I may refer him. Nyaha.

What really made my day is the fact that I was freaking alone in the office. No need to dress up and I can wear my Havs to work. On Sundays, only one supervisor is present and she’s one of them nice ones, so no problem at all. She leaves at 6:00 pm so I have the whole floor to myself. I was really productive today and even finished a two-hour video of our most hated client ever: board meetings. Yeah, I did it all by myself. Hah! Maybe because no one bothered me the whole time and no pressure at all from “The Corporation.” It is so harmonious and peaceful when they are not within reach.

Of course, I can’t end my day without my nightly ritual: hanging out with a friend for a short coffee break, which, well, may be considered as the highlight of my day. Heehee. And as cherry on my icing, Mum prepared steaks for dinner with gravy and potatoes. Gaaahh! Such a nice, nice Sunday. I just made a big deal out of pointless and bummer topic. And yet you read it through and through. (--,)

Of Factions & Retroactives

Back in the ‘90s, factions were a big hit in the wrestling world. Two prominent groups were those of Vince McMahon’s The Corporation and D-Generation X, the resident troublemakers. There came a point where these two stables were feuding with each other, often, with humorous banters and of course, scripted violence. What’s the deal? Well, nothing really. It’s just that this is what I’m feeling and seeing with everything right now. Well, you got “The Corporation,” which of course is headed by the higher people and their minions. They are strong and probably invincible, but then again, there’s still…us.

I can’t say that we’re D-X since we don’t really resort to troublemaking and property damage when retribution is required. I think “The Hart Foundation” is more appropriate since we, what’s left of us, treat each other as family. Bottom line: the whole thing is split into two factions and it’s just cool to imagine epical sequences and suggestions of what’s really a boring situation. Gots to recruit some heroes and heroines now for the sake of this never-ending battle between good and evil.

What else? Ah, yes. No physical evidence that I’ve been through three getaways. Sure I have hundreds of images but not a hint of tanned skin that should serve as my proof. Which reminds me, I haven’t written my Mean Boys Getaway review yet. Too much idleness is tiring.

Lost, Gossip Girl, and One Tree Hill are back after their respective season breaks. So, yet again, I’m feeling all independent from Lost; jerk-y in a sense because of Gossip Girl; and daydreaming romance due to Tree Hill’s characters. Sheesh.

Ooh, this one’s important: I am feeling screwed. Those pieces of white paper with words “Congratulations, you are a lucky winner of [amount here] because you’re such an asset…” were handed out and I did not get one. The retroactive salary adjustment mania just took place and lots of us didn’t even get to experience it. It’s never about the money, but a little recognition wouldn’t hurt either.

Abdel met this chic online who’s giving us invites to the hottest spots and events in town. I am not the type who misses out on these opportunities. Too bad I’m feeling a bit under the weather or else I ain’t writing right now but rather hooking up with a hot one, (it could happen!) Next week, I swear. We shall go clubbing.

And lastly, like what Eunice said, “Go for the Silver.” It’s back and I’m okay with it.

There you go. I have so much things in my mind that I just had to share/bum you guys out. I have lots more but since I need my rest (I’m sick) they’ll just hafta wait…

Going APE

10 damn seconds and its over. It’s that time of the year again where I turn into my most uncomfortable state: Annual Physical Exam or APE. I hate medicals--for one reason and one reason alone: complete blood count or CBC or IV or whatever it is that you medical people call that torture. It’s not about the pain because I have a high tolerance for pain. Pinch me to find out. It’s the thought of sticking something into your skin that gives me the creeps. I hate it. Whoever came up with it is really sadistic. But…I have to comply. So I did.

The APE started the first week of April and ends on its last day, which is on Wednesday. So, I have no choice but to complete it before then. The whole freaking month I was really uncomfortable because the damn thought is just playing with my mind, and yet, 10 seconds and its over. I didn’t even felt a thing. I know that, but I also know what’s happening and I don’t like it. Bah! Only two things that I am deathly afraid of in this world, and one of those are sharp and pointy objects. My skin is precious, I don’t want anyone poking or slicing it.

Now that I am finally done, I will treat myself to something for overcoming it. (Another year before I go through it again) Just like that kid who aces their quizzes so he’s treated with two-piece chicken from the nearest fast food joint. As for me, ridiculously expensive coffee and overpriced sugar-laced donuts will do, tomorrow hopefully. Whew.

Black Saturday

It’s about 7:00 PM and it’s Black Saturday. Oh, and I’m in the office. And lastly, I’m all alone. Literally, all alone in the fifth floor. I’ve just finished watching the latest season of Lost and I currently don’t have anything else to do since I’ve watched most shows with new episodes the whole week. Nothing to do also as I think our foreign bosses are celebrating Holy Week. I thought they weren’t Catholics?

Yeah, I’m left alone to look after voice messages. Bit stupid, really. Just convert voice messages left by people to text documents, so that the recipients will receive it in their mobiles or emails. Hey, that’s technology for you. Okay, it’s not stupid. It pays the bills. But still, everyone’s out of town and happily having dinner or starting up bonfires at the beach and I’m stuck here in my seat.

Well, that’s it really. Our maintenance engineers constantly passing by my location and giving me that “what time do you get off so we could turn off the lights” look. Yeah, the company’s into this whole cost-cutting thing for some weeks now. And me being alone and consuming electricity’s not really helping them. Mwehehe. So, there. Just wanted to make a point that I am alone. Nothing more.

Edit: It’s 11:00 PM. I just got home. I had to stay of an additional hour because those people who should relieve me came in not on time. Can’t blame them, who would wanna report to work on the eve of Easter? Still, I’m known as that guy who never renders overtime. Tsk!

Ultimate Offline Experience

They said it was impossible, but that was until I intervened. Hah! Finally, after two long years, Offline team went out of town in an outing. After so many colleagues went ahead to greener pastures, after teammates were hastily transferred to other accounts, and after so many factors and obstacles that Offline were faced with but not once flinched nor panicked from those situations, we guys are still tight!
Planning for a trip of such magnitude is no walk in the park. I wanted everyone who knows how to chop and timestamp, or at least have an idea who Huell Howser is to be present in the outing. Hence, “Offline by Heart” getaway. For three weeks, I was planning everything: venue, food, people, the whole nine yards. Kinda took its toll on me but hey, it pushed through anyways.

The said event were supposed to happen last March 1 & 2 to give way to the Incubus concert that many of my teammates purchased tickets to. But seeing that more people wouldn’t make it on those days was another headache of mine. So, we decided to move it on the 8th and 9th, and the Incubus people compromised to it. They can always go home early, which they did. Date is set; next: venue.

This is the most important thing and is the hardest to come up with. Several factors need to be considered: price, accessibility, private or public, and the likes. Bless an old colleague, Carmi, for she has this private resort for rent. And that pretty much takes care of our venue: Villa Carmencita at Pansol, Laguna.

Next would be charging the team. Not really that much of trouble as they were more than willing to shed half a thousand for this outing. Food was more of a challenge for everyone as there are lots of considerations and really can’t set the budget for it because not everyone gave their share yet.

And so, the week leading to the outing, everyone was anxious and excited. I mean, who wouldn’t be? This is history in the making. No one achieved such feat before. That’s why I said in my initial invite that the venue doesn’t matter as long as everyone’s there--which is what happened. Yay!

March 8, 2008. The big day. I reported to office early for the outing. Three sets of people will be going there. Us, shift ending at 5pm, will be the last one. One important thing: this day also marks the last day of Carl. So the event also serves as despidida for them and Anna, whose last day is on Wednesday, March 12. Anyways, come 5:01pm, everyone’s giddy and ready, except for me as I need to finish up reports. Fine, we’re still waiting for Kads anyways. Our manager did a surprising thing, before he left, he approached me and said, “Tim, magiingat kayo dun ah. Kaw na bahala sa kanila.” Err…so they know? No surprise there. As I’ve been saying, something this big is impossible to keep from everyone. Besides, who cares, right? We planned this one, we paid for it, we’re the ones who initiated this, so we’re free to take whoever we want to. Anyway, it’s go time.

We didn’t experience traffic in the expressway so we made up for lost time and arrived at Laguna around 8:30. Almost everyone was already there. The sight was surreal for me. Seeing everyone there, everyone happy and laughing, excited about the whole thing, nice! They didn’t eat until we got there…aww! So after some picture taking that ran for 30 minutes non-stop and group hugs from people who just got out of the pool (bastards!)--it’s chow time! Not bad with the grub. We had barbecue, hotdogs, roasted chicken inasals, adobo, and cerelac rice. Everyone’s full, I’m sure.

March 8 also is the birthday of our long-time mentor, Ru, who wasn’t able to join us because her friends decided to set up a surprise party for her. Well, we hoped she was surprised because she missed one helluva event. We did call her before we ate and passed the phone around so we could pay respects and greet.

Dandan started the “party” with his “You Make Me Feel Brand New” rendition; the first of many laughable moments to his credit. Time to bring out the booze. I mixed up a friend’s concoction, Screwdriver, for everyone. Well, since we didn’t have pitchers, my measurements a little off, but it was good nonetheless. But no one replaces Happy Horse so that’s the primary drink for the night.

It ain’t a party if there no singing and dancing. Unfortunately, I never planned to include myself in the dancing part. Let’s just say that it includes a Roderick Paulate song and lots of Pussycat Dolls hits. Really lost respect to lots of individuals that night. Hahaha. Here’s Emman if he was a Pussycatt doll: “Bro-Cha!” After more festivities and singing, I was surprised to see that most people retired to their quarters around 3:00 am. Only Mackoie, Claire (who just arrived), and I were the ones left with the karaoke machine. Weird, because they told me when I was planning that it’s okay even if there’re no rooms or beds for outings such as this one because hardly anyone sleeps; just party till the sun comes up. Cutscene: 3:00 am and everyone’s so peaceful. **Sigh**

I slept around 7:00 am and never really what happened from then on. I woke up to find that half of the people already left and those who are left are bugging me to go already. It’s only 11:00 am. This was probably the one who downed my spirits but the fun and experience the night before compensated more than enough to make it one of the most memorable experiences ever.

Truly, this indeed is one for the history books. It was the day that Offline Transcription & Captioning team got together, left their worries in the city, and spent time together like one big happy family.

To: Anna, Boy, Carl, Claire, Dandan, Emman, Fredz, Honee, Jacq and Ovie, Jen, Kads, Kibi, Mackoie, Mark, Met, Mico, Nyce, Odette, Patty, Roi, Ronn, Ton, Veejei

Thanks you very much, guys. Until next time.

Several Other Wings Submerges

Chopping, chopping, chopping, and look-y look-y what I chopped:

The video/file had lots of interesting and intense words but this one felt like being slapped with a newspaper! So me chooses this one!

(.--) (--.) (.--) (--.)

Yet again, another elimination day for the reality show that is my account. Two days after the second purge, we lost several teams, yet again. (What else is new?)

Our “supposed to be” life saver, Voice Text, wasn’t totally eliminated, they’re left two agents. Wow, a shocker! Leo’s safe though and he’ll be returning to Offline.

Real Time Captioning or Voice Writing also got the boot, which means Kibi, originally one of us, was a casualty. I thought that I was the only Batch 17 left in the “show” but thankfully, they retained Uncle Roi. (Although, you can’t really call it gratefulness when they demote you back after assigning you supervisory responsibilities) Whoop!

Customer Care: two casualties. We hardly knew ye.

[Breathe! Breathe! You need to sit for this one]

And for the biggest shocker of them all: our QA team was totally eradicated. This was really disturbing. Over and over again we’ve said that we’re expecting this. But removing quality assurance in an account is just total loco! I’m only close with one QA, that’s you Keem, but still, you can’t dismiss the fact that that’s QA you’re axing! Whew. (Salutations to the QA Supervisor for choosing to go down with her team rather than stay behind!)

The two former supervisors of ET/GT, who were supposed to be squeezed into the remaining teams, got their pink slips too. (Now’s a good time for a glass of water)

And finally, the most stable team, we believe it to be, will be going bye-bye next week. Broadcast, consists of NPR and ABC, will just finish this one job and they might go straight to their General Assembly, which is scheduled sometime next week! Are you kidding me? They’re supposed to be the Boston Celtics of T&C!

What happens to my team now? They say we’re intact. They say we’re the only team generating income for the account. They assured us that we’re not going anywhere. They say that we’re the best of the best. Then again, that’s what they said to the QA team.

Lots have already happened and I still have one more work day, tomorrow.
Good thing I’m looking forward to this one big session for us victims. Hoping that everyone might join!

Nuff said!

Genocide

The ship is slowly sinking. Another wing collapsed, and still, we’re safe. Feels like we’re those people in Titanic. We, the remaining people, are the women and children. Them, the crew and citizens in the hull of the ship.

Obviously, my instincts failed me. It rarely does. But it did. In a related entry, (--,), I wrote about feeling somewhat apprehensive last week because I was so sure that I’ll be booted out sooner than expected. I do make mistakes. And predicting that I was to go ASAP is an error that I committed. The news of the GA this morning left me speechless. I still am feeling troubled to this moment. This shouldn’t come as a surprise to me, but I never expected an occurrence of genocide.

I cannot say much as I wasn’t directly affected on what happened. But it stings, man. Not only because of the stability and security that they try so hard to make us believe that still exists--screw that--but also losing some of the best people that one will ever meet. Two of my closest friends, Maika and Arnee, my batchmates, we’ve known each other since day one. Even if we ain’t on the same team, we were at least under the same account. Only Roi and I are left on our batch. Not very comforting. And also, to Zelle, Soffy, Gemm, Mer, Shai, Paul, Jai, Warren, Jeff, and Arlene (also a batchmate), we may not be as close as we are with our teammates, but here’s hoping you guys and gals find better purposes and success in your endeavors.

So what now? What happens to us remaining “lucky ones?” Well, my mindset is clear, live each day like it’s my last. Technically, I’ve been doing that ever since I started working there, so why stop now? They say we are safe and secure because it is in our team that you will find the best of the best of the best. We know, obviously, it’s a fact. But we don’t buy it.

Let’s just wait for the next e-mail from those people who resources humans.

I borrowed the pic from Warren and I haven't asked permission. Please?

Nth Person Voted Out of the Floor

Survivor, Amazing Race, American Idol, Big Brother, or even The Real World, what does these shows have in common? Yep, they are all reality shows. And what’s the worst thing in reality television? Eliminations, what else? Even if you are not actually playing the game or a participating in the challenges, but just a mere spectator, you cannot dismiss the fact that you are excited or scared when elimination time comes. Stomach churns, everything is peculiar, distrust runs through veins, and suspicion overwhelms your entire self. That, my friends, is what I’m feeling right now. For some freaking reason, I think I’ll be booted out sooner than I expected. No, I ain’t vying for the America’s Next Top Model nor a Bachelor (I wish! Nyaha!). This feeling is work-related.

Only a handful of Level 2 employees left in my oh-so-perfect account and I’m sensing that the finale is just around the corner. The first ones to go were all Level 2 FTEs, which makes us, me, wonder, where’s that damn immunity idol when you need it? If only the process for elimination is done through votes, then I’ll probably get to the finale. I’m even confident that I’ll win it. No, I ain’t the most deserving, but hey, so was Richard Hatch, the prototype of all Survivor winners. Gets?

Why am I suddenly feeling this way? I don’t know. It just came over me last night. I think my indolence has finally caught up with me. Tsk tsk. And they say nice guys finish last.

Access and Denied

The irony, really. With most of our heads in the chopping block, I find it amusing that I finally got my access card after four months. Done are the days when I need to wait forever until someone opens our floor door or have to run and slide just to make it in time before the glass door closes. Dangerous, I tell you. Also, no more pesky guards wanting my autograph before letting me enter. Sheesh.

Why only now? It’s because our very responsible human resources lost it upon our return from JAKA building. They made us surrender it when we transferred buildings. And when we went back to our main office, a few months ago, they issued us new cards, but they lost mine. Tsss. If our team manager hadn’t joked about how old my ID looked like (it seems like I’ve been with the company for years and years as my ID’s really shabby and are divided into three parts), and noticed that I don’t have an access card, I would still be needing doormen services. He asked me to e-mail him directly about it, I did, I got it.

What’s ironic is that only now it came when our days are just numbered. Seriously, another storm is coming. And this time, I don’t think I’ll be dry all throughout. A friend and colleague, Jamie, is the first casualty of the storm this year. It hurts to elaborate so just read her thoughts [here]. I’ll surely miss her.

It’s starting. Another purge. I’m ready.
